This book profiles the largest American type foundry of the 19th century and documents all MS&J’s patented designs. Doug began the text as a Master’s degree thesis at the Bard Graduate Center and designed the book for Oak Knoll Press.

An advertisement for H.M. Smee, Cheesemonger and Provisioner—a random piece of 19th century ephemera—became the focus of Doug’s essay in Gastronomica. The magazine, a “journal of food and culture,” is a joint venture of the University of California Press and Williams College.
