THE ONCE AND FUTURE PENNSYLVANIA STATION

GRAPHIC DESIGN | IMAGE RESEARCH | ILLUSTRATION

This exhibition, organized by the New York Transit Museum in 2011, described the arc of this fabled gateway from brilliant technological achievement to white elephant, from urban renewal disaster to its possible 21st-century renaissance. We designed the title, color scheme, and all graphic panels. We found the images and created the large wall murals to transform the museum’s awkward gallery space in Grand Central Terminal.

Exhibition color palette and typographic style.

Angela combined historic images of the New York skyline, c. 1908, then colorized and distressed the result to create this panorama for the exhibition’s 12-foot opening mural.

(above and below) This panel reproduced a column capital from the original Pennsylvania Station at full scale. Its monumentality starkly contrasted with the confined exhibition space.
