Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music
National Museum of American Jewish History, Philadelphia

Because Bernstein was closely associated with Lincoln Center in New York City, we were inspired by the Center’s architectural design, a hybrid of modernism and classicism. We composed images and text into grids that reflected architecture as well as musical staves, and layered panels of colored acrylic. For the title typography, we chose Optima, a cross between a serif and sans-serif typeface that was popular in the 1960s and 70s.

An informal series of black-and-white photos of Bernstein conducting inspired us to create an animation of the sequence projected onto the title wall. A video loop cycled through the photos which overlapped and interacted with the title and demonstrated Bernstein’s passionate style of conducting—“The Power of Music.”
